What New AWS Region and Compliance Updates Mean for Modernization, Analytics and Observability

What Happened

  • On October 15, 2026, AWS Transform for full-stack Windows modernization added cross-region deployment of converted Aurora PostgreSQL databases in seven more Regions, bringing availability to eight. Customers can upload SQL Server DDL, select a target Region, and have dependent .NET connection strings and data-access calls updated for PostgreSQL compatibility. [1]
  • On October 15, Amazon Redshift expanded long-term system-table retention through Amazon S3 Tables to Asia Pacific (New Zealand), Canada West (Calgary), and both AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. The feature retains data beyond Redshift’s seven-day system-table limit in Apache Iceberg format. [2]
  • On October 15, AWS Security Hub CSPM added automated checks for a subset of Cyber Risk Institute Profile v2.2 requirements, with 404 supporting controls. Requirements that need manual checks remain outside its coverage. [4]
  • On October 15, the Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus collector became available in Asia Pacific (New Zealand). On October 14, AWS HealthOmics private workflows added support for images from third-party registries including Seqera Wave, NVIDIA NGC and Google Artifact Registry. [5][6]

Why It Matters to Businesses

These changes remove specific deployment constraints rather than introducing a new AI model or API version. Teams can choose a database target Region during Windows modernization, retain Redshift operational history without building a custom export pipeline, and collect container metrics in New Zealand without operating collection agents. Financial-services teams also gain more automated evidence for CRI Profile v2.2 assessments, but not a complete compliance assessment. [1][2][4][5]

Kimbodo Engineering Perspective

Regional availability is useful only if the whole application meets the same residency and recovery requirements. A converted database target, application runtime, logs, backups and monitoring destinations need to be assessed together. Likewise, automated PostgreSQL code changes should be treated as migration inputs, not proof that application behavior and query performance are unchanged. [1]

Managed retention and collection reduce operational work, but they do not replace decisions about access, retention periods or evidence quality. Security Hub’s 404 supporting controls are a starting point for mapping CRI Profile v2.2 requirements; manual checks still need owners and records. [2][4][5]

How We Would Implement It

  • Modernization: Inventory SQL Server schemas and .NET data-access paths, choose the permitted Aurora target Region, then test converted queries, transactions, connection handling and failover before cutover. [1]
  • Analytics and audit: Enable Redshift system-table retention where available, define an explicit retention policy, and validate that auditors can query the resulting Iceberg data through an approved engine. [2]
  • Controls and telemetry: Enable the CRI Profile v2.2 standard across selected accounts and linked Regions through Security Hub central configuration; assign manual requirements separately. In New Zealand, connect the managed Prometheus collector to an in-country workspace and verify what metrics it discovers. [4][5]
  • HealthOmics workflows: Test third-party image access and the copy into Amazon ECR with a private workflow before relying on an external registry in production. [6]

Risks, Costs and Security

Cross-region modernization can introduce transfer costs and residency mistakes if application traffic, backups or logs cross boundaries unintentionally. Longer Redshift retention increases stored data and broadens the period over which sensitive operational metadata must be protected. Third-party container images add supply-chain and registry-access considerations even when HealthOmics copies them into ECR. Budget for storage, collection and migration testing, and restrict access to databases, Iceberg tables, metrics workspaces and workflow images. [1][2][5][6]
