How to Choose AI Infrastructure Without Locking Agents to One GPU or Cloud

What Happened

NVIDIA described NemoClaw as a stack for building specialized agents with a model, harness and domain-specific tools. Its production emphasis is a runtime that enforces policies, plus optimization and observability to support reliable execution [1]. NVIDIA also published guidance for checking and configuring GPUDirect Storage, which provides a data path between NVIDIA GPUs and storage intended to improve bandwidth and reduce latency, CPU use and memory use where the platform and workload support it [2].

These developments address different bottlenecks: agent control and data movement. Neither establishes that a particular GPU, cloud or deployment platform is the best choice for every workload.

Why It Matters to Businesses

For agents, model quality alone does not determine production readiness. The harder decision is how to give an agent useful access to enterprise systems while constraining what it can read, change and send [1]. For data-intensive inference or training, storage throughput can limit GPU utilization; a faster GPU will not resolve an inefficient data path [2].

Buyers comparing NVIDIA, AMD and Intel hardware; AWS, Google Cloud and Azure services; or Databricks, Snowflake and Cloudflare deployment options should therefore benchmark the complete workload. The relevant measures include task success, latency, throughput, storage performance, operational effort and total cost—not accelerator specifications in isolation.

Kimbodo Engineering Perspective

We would keep the application contract independent of a single model or accelerator where practical, while accepting targeted optimizations when measurements justify them. GPUDirect Storage is one such optimization: evaluate it for workloads that repeatedly move substantial data from storage to NVIDIA GPUs, rather than making it a default requirement [2].

For agents, we would treat the policy-enforcing runtime as a security boundary, not merely a deployment convenience. Tool permissions, approval points and audit records need explicit design even when an agent stack supplies a harness and observability [1].

How We Would Implement It

  • Define workloads: Separate interactive inference, batch processing, training and agent workflows. Record latency targets, data volumes, residency requirements and acceptable failure modes.
  • Benchmark candidates: Run representative jobs on shortlisted hardware and cloud services. Measure end-to-end cost and performance, including data loading and network time. Test GPUDirect Storage only on supported NVIDIA configurations and compare it with the existing path [2].
  • Build a controlled agent layer: Connect the model, harness and domain tools through a runtime with scoped credentials, tool-level policies, human approval for consequential actions, and execution traces [1].
  • Keep deployment portable where it pays: Package services with explicit interfaces for model calls, storage and tool access. Choose among cloud AI services, data platforms and edge deployment based on measured workload needs rather than assuming feature parity.
  • Operate against service objectives: Monitor task outcomes, policy denials, GPU utilization, storage throughput, latency and spend; use those results to revisit platform choices.

Risks, Costs and Security

The principal agent risk is excessive access to enterprise data or actions; limit tool scope, isolate credentials and retain auditable records [1]. Infrastructure risks include paying for underutilized accelerators, adding operational complexity for a storage optimization that offers little benefit, and becoming dependent on platform-specific tooling [2]. Benchmarking and staged rollout cost time, but they are cheaper than committing a production workload on specifications alone.
